Review Time: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour Vol. 6
I have been a huge fan of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s quirky, energetic graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim ever since a friend turned me on to it three years ago. Bryan’s mix of video games, anime, manga and indie rock music has been a breath of fresh air in a sea filled with muscle bound super heroes. Even though the series has more than it’s fair share of over the top super powered martial arts action, the characters all remain very much grounded in a reality almost any twenty something can relate to. And I’m more than happy to report that the final volume of the series ends it on a very epic and sweet high note.
All the graphic novels center around the title character Scott Pilgrim who can be best described as a lovable and charming clueless jerk. He’s surrounded by a huge cast of supporting characters ranging from Scott’s gay roommate Wallace Wells to his band mates Stephen Stills and Kim Pine. The most important ones are his main love interest Ramona Flowers and the League of Seven Evil Exes led by the mysterious Gideon Graves.

The previous volume Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe can almost be considered the Empire Strikes Back of the series because it ends on a cliff hanger (that I shall not spoil here if you’ve never read the comics). Suffice it to say the confrontation between the two rivals is both humorous and epic with many character details, like the reason why Ramona is so attached to Gideon in the first place, are finally revealed.
Not only is that story line wrapped up we also find out the fates of the other supporting characters in Scott’s life. Is Knives Chau still waiting for the affections of Scott? Is Sex Bob-Omb actually breaking up? Where the heck does young Neil fit in to everything? Will the girls from Scott’s past ever forgive him for being a jerk? All the questions will be more or less answered in this volume. And for long time Scott Pilgrim fans, if the last few pages don’t make you slightly tear up, than you’ll never earn enough love points to truly level up!! It ends on a perfectly sweet note that all fans of the series should appreciate.
Bryan Lee O’Malley has created a minor masterpiece with the whole Scott Pilgrim series. And Volume Six ends it on such an epic note that half of me wishes the series continued while the other half of me knows that this is how it should end. All I know is that I am definitely looking forward to what Bryan will do next! If you haven’t read a single volume go out and buy the first one Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life! Trust me… you’ll get hooked just like I did!
Disclosure: I purchased my copy of Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International at the Oni Press Booth.

I really enjoyed this series a lot. Having read this before seeing the movie I really can’t understand why the director didn’t use this ending. Was it the budget or something? The ending of to this is so cinematic it’s hard to understand why he didn’t use it.
