Possible U.S. vs Japan global baseball World Series in the works
Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is in talks with Japanese commissioner Ryozo Kato to possibly have the MLB World Series champions face off against the Nippon Professional Baseball league champions in a Global World Series.
I really like this idea. Club championships exist in other sports like soccer where pro English soccer teams face off against other pro teams from around the world to determine who is the best professional soccer team in the world. A baseball equivalent of that, even if it’s just between the U.S. and Japan, would help boost baseball as an international sport.
The only problems would be that U.S. baseball players are notoriously apathetic when it comes to international competitions. And the risk of injury to players could possibly derail any true sense of competition with managers “holding back” and not truly playing to win. Playing for international bragging rights may not be enough for players to truly care about a Global World Series.
In any case both commissioners are only in the talking stages so it still remains to be seen whether or not this will actually happen.
