The trailer for remake/reboot THE KARATE KID has hit the internets. The verdict? Looks surprisingly good. Jackie Chan just might have his first American acting role where he doesn’t play a complete goof ball. Jaden Smith can actually act and surprises with his physicality. And for the kung fu fans out there the appearance of martial arts star Yu Rong Guong and perhaps a duel between him and Jackie Chan makes the film that much more interesting.
The bad? It’s called THE KARATE KID even though there isn’t any karate in the film. Kung fu? Yes. Wu Shu? Oh heavens, yes. But no Karate. None.
So why is it still called THE KARATE KID? A message to whoever is marketing the film. Using misplaced nostalgia to trick movie goers into watching a film that may have been inspired by the original 80’s film, but is completely different in style and culture, is bad and lazy marketing.
Good trailer though. The film is now officially on my radar for next year.
