cosplaycompI find cosplay to be infinitely fascinating.  People dressing up as their favorite anime/manga/video game characters isn’t anything new by any means.  But cosplayers do more then just play dress up.  They try to become the characters they are portraying as closely as possible.  And that means incredibly intricate and, most importantly, screen accurate costumes that are usually hand made.  If the character has some sort of trade mark pose, cosplayers will try to painstakingly imitate that as well.  It’s certainly not the cliche image of a fat guy in a crappy costume that they bought at some low budget Halloween store.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con had plenty of cool cosplayers, but the phenomenon has gone global as evidenced in the picture gallery at asianoffbeat.com.  Cosplaying was probably thought of as a purely Japanese quirk a decade ago (and people still think this unfortunately), but it’s something that has united many different people all over the world.  And it shows you the reach that Japanese pop culture has now!

Enjoy the pictures!
