jaychouTaiwanese pop star Jay Chou has been cast as Kato in the upcoming Green Hornet film.  The news was revealed on the Sony Pictures twitter account which read:

THE GREEN HORNET gets his Kato in Taiwanese Superstar Jay Chou.”

Much has been made about the casting of Kato starting with the initial casting of Hong Kong funny man Stephen Chow.  Chow bowed out of the project in April and the search once again resumed to find some one who would fill the shoes that Bruce Lee once wore back in the 1960’s.

Now the question many will ask is this.  Is Jay Chou right for this role?  Many have argued that the role should have been given to an Asian-American actor based on the audition scripts that were handed out.  Asian actors that are “imported” might not be able to handle the nuances of the humor or be able to keep up with Seth Rogen’s improvisational style of comedy mostly due to language barriers.  But Jay Chou has apparently over come this barrier to land the role since it has been reported that Rogen and director Michel Gondry have focused on English speaking skills as one of there priorities during the auditions.  And as a pair, Jay Chou and Seth Rogen don’t look that bad together.  Chou certainly has that dead-pan look and demeanor that contrasts with Rogen’s goofy personality and that fits in with the direction that The Green Hornet is going in.  I do think Seth Rogen is a very funny man and that Michel Gondry is one of the most truly visionary directors working today so I do have some confidence in their decision to cast Jay Chou.

So what do you guys think?  Jay Chou as Kato:  Good decision or terribly miscast?
