DiCaprio wants SMAP for “Ninja Scroll”

Leonardo DiCaprio, with Warner Bros. and his production company Appian Way, wants to cast the Japanese idol group SMAP as the leads in the upcoming live action adaptation of the anime classic Ninja Scroll.
Kudos to Leo DiCaprio for expressing a desire to stay true to the roots of the original anime. To want to cast actual Japanese people to play Japanese characters might seem obvious to most of us. But with the recent casting controversies of Dragonball Evolution and M. Night Shymalan’s The Last Airbender, it seems like DiCaprio doesn’t want bad fanboy vibes to curtail this project. One of the biggest fears of any Hollywood live action anime adaptation for most anime fans is the total ‘white washing’ of the cast, but it seems that Leo himself is a pretty big anime geek too. Hopefully the Japanese cast is also allowed to speak Japanese in the film.
Members of SMAP have acted before in other projects on television and on film. But if cast in Ninja Scroll, this would be the first project all of them would be acting together.
No word on whether or not this will actually go through, but at least it’s a very good sign of the direction Leo wants this live action adaptation to go. Let’s hope this is also indicative of the direction of the live action Akira which is also being produced by Leo DiCaprio’s Appian Way.
