Kazuaki Kiriya’s ‘Goemon’ trailer now up

I love Kazuaki Kiriya’s debut feature film Casshern. It’s one of the most underrated and misunderstood films to come out of Japan. Some critics simply dismiss it as an exercise in style of substance or that the story is too complex and convulated to understand. I see it as a film with tremendous visual effects and style with a storyline that is more about how love (or the absence of love in some cases) can bring out the good or the evil in people rather than complex political shenanigans. But it’s been a while since Casshern came out way back in 2004 and I’ve been waiting and waiting for Kazuaki Kiriya to come out with something new.
The wait is over.
Kiriya’s next film is Goemon which is loosely based on a real life folk hero Ishikawa Goemon who was a lot like Robin Hood in that he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He was also noted for being boiled to death as punishment for a failed attempt to assassinate Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was a Sengoku period daimyo who unified Japan. Enough with the history lesson though because the film doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a one-hundred percent period recreation anyway. The look of the film as seen in the trailer suggests a much similar look to Casshern, but in a period setting. And that is cool with me since I loved the look of Casshern. And the action is just as frenetic and stylized as Casshern was and there seems to be more action in Goemon than there was in Casshern. But enough from me. Here’s the trailer:
