Woman jailed over killing virtual ex-husband

A 43 year old woman in Japan has been arrested on suspicion of hacking. She is suspected of ‘mudering’ an avatar of her virtual husband after they apparently divorced in the extremely popular MMORPG Maple Story. The woman allegedly used the login information taken from the virtual ex-husband, a 33 year old officer worker, when they were happily virtually married. If convicted she faces a jail term of 5 years or a fine of $5,000.
According to Yahoo! Games a police official in northern Sapporo has quoted the woman saying ”I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry,” to police officers and investigators.
This has got to be one of the weirdest news stories I’ve ever heard about. Going to jail for killing a virtual avatar (well technically for hacking, but still). They DO NOT mess around in Japan!

she should have slept with him in the real world. guess there are limitations to a virtual marriage after all!
