In Japan: Introducing the iDish

Monday, July 26th, 2010 |

Some guy in Japan is using his iPad as a make shift decorative dish to serve his food on.  He calls it the iDish.  It’s not an app because there is nothing to download.  All you have to do is search for an image of your favorite serving dish, zoom it till it fills the screen, place food on the “dish” and now you have an instant decorative dish to eat your food!  Though I would recommend putting some sort of protective sheet to make sure the display doesn’t get all messed up.

On the Web: Hello Kitty Miniature Pizzas

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 |

It seems like I can’t go a week a month with out posting at least one Hello Kitty themed blog.  This time it’s a picture of miniature pizzas shaped in the form of Hello Kitty.  I wonder what else this icon of branding and marketing will show up as next?

Gundam Cafe to open in Japan

Monday, April 26th, 2010 |

gundamcafeOh Japan.  You continue to become more amazing and full of win with everything that you do.  As if I needed even more reason to visit your lovely shores you go ahead and do this.  A theme restaurant based on the sci-fi anime/manga Mobile Suit Gundam will open in Tokyo’s Akihabara district.  At the Gundam Cafe customers can watch videos about the long running franchise while trying foods and desert based on key characters in the MS Gundam universe.  The restaurant interior will be designed with a futuristic look to it presumably based on the world of Gundam.  The very fact that the waitresses will all dress in the Earth Federation female uniform makes this place already a winner in my book!

Creative Japanese Barcode Designs

Friday, December 18th, 2009 |

barcodeThese creatively designed barcodes are the work of Japanese design firm d-barcode.  I love the way they have successfully turned something so boring and mundane into humorous visual gags or interesting pieces of art.  As cool as this is would most people ever notice things like these on their food or beverage labels?  I know when I occasionally snack on some chips the last thing I would ever do is check out the barcode.  But perhaps that could change if the barcodes were as creatively designed as these.

More designs can be seen HERE.

tokidoki loves Yogurtland!

Saturday, October 31st, 2009 |

IMG_0294One of the staples of my diet during the 10th San Diego Asian Film Festival was yogurt from Yogurtland.  It was mostly because they were located right upstairs from the theater and SDAFF staff members got a discount during the festival.

So when I walked into Yogurtland the first time I was surprised to see tokidoki characters splashed all over the store.  tokodoki and Yogurtland have teamed up together in a similar cross promotion campaign that Domo and 7-Eleven have.  Right now you can get special collectible spoons with tokidoki characters and special small size tokidoki cups.  There are 4 collectible spoons in all, but only two are available while supplies last.  The other two spoons won’t come out until later in November.

The campaign is proving to be very popular, at least it seems like it’s working based on how my SDAFF volunteers (who are mostly Asian-American high school students) were so excited about the tokidoki cups and spoons.  Some were even trading spoons in an effort to collect the two that are currently available.  And they can’t wait for the next two collectible spoons to come out.

Japanese mascot DOMO to take over 7-Eleven this fall

Friday, October 9th, 2009 |

domoseveneleven

The mascot for Japanese TV station NHK has seemingly become the mascot for Japanese pop culture itself.  The mascot, which is essentially a brown block with a face, arms and feet, was designed by Japanese illustrator and director Tsuneo Goda.  The plain old simplicity of the mascot is what is very appealing and charming about Domo and 7-Eleven hopes to capitalize on this appeal in the fall as they plaster Domo all over their merchandise.

Not unlike a similar promotion they did with The Simpsons, according to Creativity-Online, Domo “will appear on coffee cups and hot dog containers, fuzzy Domo toys will dangle from Slurpee straws, and gargantuan open-mouthed Domos will serve as candy displays. 7-Eleven will also be selling a new Domo-inspired Slurpee flavor, Fuji Frost by Fanta as well as various other Domo paraphernalia, including collectible action figures, DVDs, plush characters and clothing.”

You can also watch some webisodes featuring Domo.  The first episode deals with Domo’s first experience drinking a slurpee.  You can watch it at: www.slurpee.com

New People 1

So I recently did my own impressions of Viz Picture’s NEW PEOPLE Japanese pop culture mall.  But I didn’t get to go to the grand opening of the mall which was also part of the J-Pop Summit Festival in San Francisco’s Japantown.  But one of my friends was on hand at the event and took plenty of pictures and even wrote up his experiences and impressions of the J-Pop Summit and the opening of NEW PEOPLE.
